I love that there’s a blog called “this is white culture” that is solely devoted to bad things white people did, not their cultures at all. So I guess I can make a blog called “this is black culture” and post gang and crime records and that’s 100% okay. Or “this is Muslim culture” and make it all about terrorism.

WELL GOLLY GEE DO YOU THINK SO? Because saying that all white people are responsible for the Atlantic slave trade sounds pretty racist to me, given that, you know, that was between the African slaveholders and the British and Americans and had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with my ancestors, who were incredibly poor farmers and serfs from Ireland and Lithuania who had to flee to America at around the turn of the century (by which time slavery had already been abolished in the US) because they were being treated like slaves. Even if they had been living in America at the time when slavery was legal they wouldn’t have been able to afford a slave; in fact they probably would have been working with them in the fields and treated about the same, since the first slaves in America were actually white serfs. But please, tell me more about how dirty my hands are because of circumstances surrounding my birth that I could not control and continue to treat me differently based on the color of my skin without actually knowing anything about my heritage, I’m sure that isn’t racist at all!

I love this I love this I love it. Oh my god. I’m so sick of being called a racist.

I think the original poster did a shitty job of articulating it, but the way people claim the legacies of slavery and racism are not their “fault” is kind of disingenuous. is a present-day white person personally guilty of participating in the slave trade? no. do you personally discriminate against people of other races on a daily basis? I hope not.

but although a white person may not be “at fault” in the sense of instigating the racial prejudices themselves, they ARE the beneficiary of centuries of racial privileges that give them an advantage merely for being born with a certain skin color. (I should say “we” since I’m very, very white.)

And it does suck, as the poster above mentioned, that you can be beholden to “circumstances surrounding your birth that you could not control” — it sucks to think that you are daily benefiting from a fucked up system that prioritizes your success based on your biological traits and not your personal character. but then again, racial minorities face the opposite problem every day- due to circumstances surrounding their births that they could not control, they are daily prejudiced against by a social system that evaluates them based on biology and not character.

of course it’s facetious and harmful for a white person to automatically be deemed “racist” for their skin color, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask white people like myself to be consistently aware of the privileges we’re afforded for no good reason and to acknowledge that other people who may achieve less than us are facing a steep upward climb that we can’t even imagine.

and I also would avoid the trap of arguing that it’s just as harmful for a POC to say racist things about white people as vice versa. while I agree that it has a poor moral reflection on that individual just as much as it would reflect badly on a white person who was bigoted against minorities, if an insult or prejudice doesn’t have institutionalized power behind it, it’s not capable of de-railing your life in the way that a black or Hispanic American’s life can be crucially damaged by racism. to have someone say that you are evil because you’re white is painful and hateful, absolutely. but it won’t stop you from getting a job, going to college, etc. etc, while a lot of ethnic minorities even today face these problems in every part of America.

So, in the middle of everything today, we ran across a hellaciously distressed momma mallard and a bunch of her baby ducks that had fallen down a sewer grate. Another guy was already trying to fish them out, so my friend and I called animal control before we tried to fish the rest of them out. When Animal Control got there, we had all of them out and the mother duck quacking very happily. I was surprised - none of us got snapped at or hurt. I was even holding onto a bag at one point that had all of them in it and she just watched me.

I love how pleased the momma duck looks in the pic where she’s standing on the dude. Like, “He’s savin’ my babies!”
